Great Our First Fishing Trip With My Son

I was born and raised in Georgia, and a lot of us Georgians like to fish. I am definitely one of them.

My four-year-old son Billy and I went for our first fishing trip recently! His mom was a little skeptical that Billy would enjoy fishing or be able to do it. However, I knew that Billy was extremely excited to be joining me on a fishing trip. He knows I'm a fisherman and I always tell him stories about fishing. He couldn't wait to actually go fishing himself. "We're going fishing!" he kept announcing, every single day in the week leading up to the trip. (This convinced my wife that even if he couldn't fish, he would definitely be interested in it!) His excitement was contagious. When we pulled up to the lake I called out, "We're here!" When he heard me say that, he immediately began to shout. We got out, and he helped me carry the container of crickets for bait. Billy liked to help me out whenever he could.

During this trip was the first time I would be using my new fish finder. My dad had given me his old fish finder and I'd gotten the hang of it, but then it broke (it was pretty old). Having used a fish finder, I knew I wouldn't want to fish without one--I was hooked (pun not intended). I bought a new one after doing plenty of research--I read lots of fish finder reviews online on various websites. Now, on this trip, I couldn't wait to see how it worked.

We located a good spot using the fish finder. It told us the depth of the water and showed us lots of information about the fish--their presence, their species, their trajectory, and their size. Soon we were reeling in lots of catfish.  Even Billy actually caught one! I was so proud as I watched him reel it in and grin for joy when he saw the fish he'd caught. I recalled that some of my earliest memories were going fishing with my dad. I knew my dad had also been taught to fish by his father, and I was so glad and grateful to be able to continue this family tradition with my son. Everyone deserves a family tradition as special and fun as this one.

I'd say we caught about ten catfish in only a couple hours. It was a really successful trip! We threw them in the cooler and brought them back home. My wife and I prepared the fish and cooked them for dinner. They were so fresh and delicious, especially with some fresh herbs from our garden.

Now Billy knows the excitement and pride that comes with catching your own meal. I'm glad to teach him that food doesn't just appear out of nowhere; people actually have to grow or hunt their food in order to eat. A lot of kids, especially those in developed countries, don't get to learn that lesson. I think it's a really important one. I want my son growing up self-sufficient, appreciative of what he has, and definitely not spoiled. I think this trip is the beginning of a lot more lessons that will help him grow into a good, capable person, and I'm proud to be be able to raise him right.
